51本色 is officially rolling out our new mission statement. We are excited to share the new mission statement with you and the reasons behind the changes!

The New Mission Statement

51本色 empowers students of all backgrounds to lead lives of critical thought, compassionate action and courageous leadership.

As a liberal arts university rooted in the Lutheran tradition and aligned with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, 51本色 develops the mind, heart, soul and body, preparing leaders for lives of service.

Why A New Mission Statement?

One of the standards for Reaffirmation of Accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is to review the mission statement. The Board of Regents, who have primary responsibility for the University鈥檚 mission, asked for an official review of the mission statement.

President Don Christian chose ten people 鈥 six full-time faculty members, two academic administrators and two full-time staff 鈥 to serve on the mission review team. The review team believed that 鈥淒eveloping Christian Leaders鈥 did not encompass the three aspects that a mission statement should answer, which are who, what and why. So the team embarked on creating a new mission statement that would answer these questions.

The Board of Regents was then presented with and approved the new, more comprehensive mission statement. Other members of the community, including faculty, staff and alumni, were also presented with the proposed change.

The new mission statement the team created clearly communicates who 51本色 is, what 51本色 does and the reason behind what 51本色 does.

What Does The Mission Statement Mean For CTX?

鈥淎rticulating these statements shapes how we think about our values, what we teach in our classrooms and how we interact with various constituencies,鈥 Christian said. 鈥淒escribing the type of graduate we prepare shapes our curriculum, its outcomes and assessment practices. Finally, the school commits itself to specific ways of delivering and living out our promises by being explicit with certain phrases (such as 鈥榮tudents of all backgrounds鈥).鈥

We are excited to begin rolling out the new mission statement across the University. For more information about the new mission statement, please view our Spring 2019 Alumni magazine, 鈥淎 New Mission? Not Really鈥︹
